What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes redness, scaling and itching of the skin. It is usually seen on the scalp, face, ears, chest, back and groin. This condition occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin are overactive and skin cells grow and die rapidly.

What are the Symptoms?

- Redness and scaling

- Oily or greasy skin

- Itching

- Dandruff on the scalp

- Thick, oily crusts on the skin

What are the Causes?

The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is unknown, but several factors are thought to play a role. These include genetic predisposition, stress, hormonal changes, oily skin, and overgrowth of Malassezia furfur, a type of fungus.

What is the Treatment?

Seborrheic dermatitis is usually a manageable condition, but it cannot be completely cured. Treatment options may include shampoos (zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide), topical corticosteroids, antimicrobial creams, and antifungal medications. Stress management, a healthy lifestyle and improved skin care habits can also help.

Precaution

It may not be possible to completely prevent seborrheic dermatitis, but some precautions can be taken. These include proper skin care, avoiding stress, eating a balanced diet and using appropriate hair and skin care products.

Nevertheless, it is best to consult a dermatologist for a specific treatment plan or for more detailed information.
