What is Xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma is a yellowish lesion caused by fatty deposits on the inside of the eyelids. This usually occurs on the inside of the eyelid, between the white part of the eye and the roots of the eyelashes. Xanthelasma is usually painless and causes no visible discomfort, but in some cases it can cause itching or irritation.

Xanthelasma is often associated with fat metabolism or cholesterol levels, as it occurs as a result of fat accumulation. It can also be associated with the aging process and usually occurs after the age of 40. In some cases, xanthelasma can be a symptom of underlying medical conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes or liver disease.

Treatment of xanthelasma is usually cosmetic and aims to provide symptomatic relief. Treatment options may include laser surgery, cryotherapy (cold treatment), electrocauterization (burning lesions using electric current) and surgical removal. However, it is important to assess underlying medical conditions before a diagnosis of xanthelasma is made.

Although xanthelasma is usually not a serious health problem, it can sometimes be a symptom of underlying medical conditions. Therefore, it is important to consult an ophthalmologist or dermatologist if you notice any abnormal lesions on your eyelid.
